- default.awl, *.awl - Amibroker Workspace layout files. Text files that contain the information about the layouts and chart sheets. The default.awl file stored in "Layouts" subfolder inside database folder contains default LOCAL layout for this database. The default.awl file stored in "Layouts" subfolder of AmiBroker main directory contains default GLOBAL layout (used when there is no local layout present). If you delete this file then default layout will be generated based on default.layout file that is supplied with AmiBroker.
But if to duplicate AB's folder sounds complicated at first, you could also run AB x32 and x64 at the same time.
So you may have the benefit of different default layouts.
Otherwise, if you just (shift) double click the icon, changing layouts will be an every day, every run task.

But only if you need different default layouts.
If a different DB is needed, /database path should be enough.
I imagine that if you will use multiple instances, you will need different AFLs running (default layout) or DB.
In my applications, multiples charts and sheets are enough.

only works with programs that allows the use of multiple instance (VLC, Paint, Notepad, Chrome..etc)
W$ historicaly is a single user system , no forking allowed so multiple instances must be implemented in running programs or duplicate instalation the same program with different name.
