@Keith:
"Steep learning curve" ? So that's the case with any knowledge based application. Does that mean the developer will wait till the most "unknowledgeble" user gets comfortable with the app and buy it? This does not make any sense.
The developer is not there to take care of learning capablities and comfort zones of each and every user. He will rather setup a framework and set of policies which will cover a majority of userbase, if not all.
I too strongly disagree with Amibroker's marketing model as in Amibroker is giving away a fully functional copy, which can easily be hacked-in by hiring someone for $20 at freelancer.com. Rather they should give a version of app as free trial which has a portion of source code missing from the app itself, which will restrict user to even "save" or do some very critical thing.
As Keith you said "Optimum" level of Marketing strategy, even though I have High regards and lots of Respect for TJ, i feel he is an amazing and talented developed, trader, coder, app designer and architect and very creative at it. But that exhaust him leaving no much focus on marketing strategy. Which leads to a dimention where Tradestation, Ninja trader, Metastock which all are a shame in front of Amibroker but still outperform Amibroker in terms of marketing strategies becase they are typical Corporations with a dedicated set of resources for marketing. While at Amibroker, its a "One man Army", (The TJ Effect), which leaves low impactful Marketing strategies.
The Price of Amibroker is ridiculously low. Now, TJ may argue that he wants to benefit a majority of trading community or whatever. But this itself shows a how much of revenue and Profitability Potentials are being left on Table by Amibroker.
Which is Sad, when I consider how much of R&D and dedication TJ has given to Amibroker, the kind of intangible and knowledge based assets he has created over decades of available for sale for a bargain, making it a highly undervalued product for a user but a massive reveneue and profitability potentials left on the table.
Thanks,
Ankur
