I am a long time (over eleven years) registered and paying user of AB. And I strongly disagree. AB should NOT remove unregistered users from the forum.
Why? Because all groups, in order to stay alive, need New members. I guess that most people who try the 30day free trial, give up without purchasing AB. Perhaps a few of those will still check the forum from time to time. And will eventually sign up.
Better Yet: My personal opinion is that TJ, and many other software authors, are a too restrictive with their free trials. Instead they might invoke a marketing model which I call "Drugs on the School Yard". I call it that because we all know how that works. Give away the drug until the user is addicted. Then start charging for it.
Of coarse some users will take longer to get addicted than others. As for AB, with its steep learning curve, I would guess three to six months with no restrictions whatsoever, would hook 90% of real users. Where the present model probably would hook less than half the number. So what if millions of non addicts used the program for free for six months -- AB hasn't lost a thing.
Yes, there is some Optimum combination of what to give away and for how long. I just can't believe AB's model is anywhere near optimum.
