In my experience, i7's and your advertised "Gaming Rigs" are a waste of money. The value I think is in dual Xeon Workstations, depending on the CPU you can have 20mg on board Cashe each and 8 cores 16 HT. So two of those will give your 32 Virtual cores and run memory at 2133GHz etc. Not to mention have enough slots to put in serious memory down the road > 128 GBs. It is always cheaper to by the rig with minimal hardware but then upgrade it yourself. Just my 2 cents
Happy weekend.

Just get the top of the line I7
microcenter is usually the best deal for instore cpu
the memory at least 16 gb
the motherboard I like gigabyte
again microcenter may be the best deal for a combo (cpu+motherboard)
also for a motherboard you may want to go ITX this make your machine small and more portable

My desktop is getting old. So it's time to renew. Does anybody have any good ideas for both CPUs and amount of RAM?
I notice in this link:
http://www.amibroker.com/guide/h_multithreading.html
it states Ami Pro can use up to 32 threads. I had a look at some high end i7s and they only seem to have about 8 logical processors. If I want to let Ami use all 32, would I need to look at the Xeon chipsets? I notice some of them have up to 36.
How about RAM? Is there a limit? Anyone got any good tips on RAM?
TIA
