Good Afternoon —
Last week I reported on Old Republic International Corporation's earnings call for the fourth quarter of 2021. Both Stewart and First American have their earnings call scheduled for later this week. There is no doubt about it, fourth quarter earnings season is upon us.
In early December, the American Land Title Association published its third quarter market share analysis, which found that the title insurance industry had its best quarter on record, with a 32.5% year-over-year increase in title insurance premium volume. If Old Republic's Q4 earnings are a bellwether, it looks like the record-setting trend continued in the fourth quarter.
During the firm's fourth quarter earnings call, Craig Smiddy, Old Republic's president and CEO, announced that the firm's pre-tax income, excluding investment gains, was $335.1 million for the fourth quarter and $1.16 billion for all of 2021, representing 20.7% and 40.2% year-over-year increases, respectively. This was the first time yearly pre-tax income exceeded $1 billion. Specifically, from the firm's title insurance sector, premiums and fees totaled $1.18 billion in the fourth quarter up from $1.03 billion in Q3. Overall, in 2021, Old Republic's title insurance group generated $4.40 billion in revenue, up 34% from a year prior.
While it will certainly be interesting to get a look at market leader First American's fourth quarter earnings, if I am being honest, I am most interested in seeing how Stewart's four major acquisitions (Devon Title, Las Cruces Abstract and Title, Rainier Title and Greater Illinois Title Co. and subsidiaries) at the end of 2021, impacted its earnings, expenditure and market share in the fourth quarter. At the end of the third quarter, Stewart was the smallest of the "Big Four" title insurers, according to ALTA. It won't be too long before we can see if these acquisitions have helped Stewart increase its market share from the 8.2% reported by ALTA in Q3 of 2021.
If there are any specific storylines that you find most interesting or that you would like me to look into this earnings season, let me know!
Until next week,
