There's been a lot of speculation about who the next FHFA director is likely to be, but last week that talk coalesced around one person:Mike Calhoun, the president at the Center for Responsible Lending. Calhoun is a very familiar face on Capitol Hill, having testified before the House and Senate on banking, lending, financial reform, consumer credit and consumer protection for years.
Sources told us to expect an announcement on Monday, but yesterday the White House released their pick forGinnie Mae president — the eminently qualified Alanna McCargo — without a word about Calhoun.
Is the Calhoun nomination now in doubt? The top leadership spot at FHFA has had its share of drama in recent years after theSupreme Court ruled that the CFPB's lone director could be fired at will by the president. That set a precedent for the FHFA as well, and as soon as the Court made it official in June of this year, Bidenreplaced FHFA Director Mark Calabria with Sandra Thompson.
Calhoun is seen as "neutral to modestly positive for the housing market" according to housing analyst Bose George or Keefe Bruyette & Woods. Read more about his thoughts on regulating the GSEs as utilitieshere.
