Remember BRAWL? The acronym stands for Brokers Rallying Against Whole-tail Lending, and it was the 2017 precursor of today's AIME. I'm in Las Vegas for AIME's Fuse conference and what's clear is that brokers are still passionate about their community. I go to a lot of events and it's one of the few that packs ballrooms during content sessions and features enthusiastic applause for association leaders that they feel are personal champions of their cause.
AIME prides itself on a culture of promoting brokers as partners, not competitors. In a session on the evolution from BRAWL to AIME, former AIME Chairman Anthony Casa shared the stage with brokers who have grown their businesses through AIME resources and connections they made at previous events.
Speaker Matt Gouge of Answer Home Loans said after his first AIME event he called and talked to Casa, UWM CEO Mat Ishbia and other successful brokers who all spent time coaching him on his business. In the last four years he's grown his business to 150 LOs and offered to be a resource for newer brokers in the same way.
Casa built the BRAWL movement and then AIME by calling and personally lobbying hundreds of loan officers, and he is still a very popular figure despite stepping down from AIME in 2020 following a lawsuit filed by the wife of a Rocket executive. Looking at the evolution of the organization, he said he is most proud of the sustainability of the broker channel.
Ironically, it could have all turned out very differently. Casa recalled contacting the National Association of Mortgage Brokers when it became clear BRAWL needed to evolve. By his telling, NAMB told him to "pound sand," a move that led directly to founding AIME.
