The annual ETF awards show who will take place April 20th. I will be interviewing 2019's Lifetime Achievement winner, Reggie Browne of GTS, on the state of the markets and the ETF industry itself. By the way, nominees for lifetime achievement in ETFs for 2021 are Eric Balchunas (Bloomberg), Bruce Bond (Innovator), Matt Hougan (Bitwise), Burton Malkiel (Wealthfront), Jan van Eck (VanEck). I vote for all of the above.
Nice start! We had Jamie Wise, the founder of the VanEck Social Sentiment ETF (BUZZ), on ETF Edge two weeks ago, right after it started trading. It already has $500 million in assets under management. They pick stocks based on social sentiment reading and rebalance monthly.
The long-awaited bitcoin ETF is getting more real, with VanEck bitcoin ETF filing hitting SEC register on March 15th. They have 45 days to approve, deny, or extend. Maybe this time? My bet is they will extend it but ultimately approve in 2021. Several others, including WisdomTree ETFs have similar offers.
Money keeps pouring into ETFs. ETFGI reported record year to date net inflows of $33.80 billion into actively managed ETFs, much higher than the prior U.S. record of $12.47 billion set in February 2020.
There's about 200 ETF providers, but don't kid yourself: the big are getting bigger. About 90% of all the assets under management in ETFs are in just 5 companies: iShares 36.7%, Vanguard 28.5%, State Street, 15.4%, Invesco 5.4%, and Schwab 3.9%. Cathie Wood's Ark Investment? Just 0.9%
