And Bloomberg reports that even though they have been pushing utilities around the country to provide more clean energy, they appear to think this may be too much of a good thing, fearing it will drive up electricity costs. It says that in a joint regulatory filing, Facebook and Google complained the proposed project is an "exceedingly costly, massive increase in generation that MidAmerican has not demonstrated is necessary." Microsoft has told regulators it agrees with that concern. But Bloomberg notes any big project is "bound to trigger some back and forth" and the three companies may ultimately come on board, especially if they win some concessions. |
While Warren Buffett and Elon Musk don't always see eye to eye, the Chinese electric carmaker backed by Berkshire Hathaway has a warmer relationship with Tesla's CEO. CNN Business reports that an executive from BYD told a Chinese state-owned broadcaster, "BYD respects Tesla, and we also admire Tesla. We are now good friends with Elon Musk, and we are going to supply him with batteries very soon." Bloomberg's Hyperdrive newsletter notes that BYD is "working on plans to deliver a longer-term advantage over competitors, aiming to become more directly involved in the mining of lithium, the raw material that's crucial for EV batteries." |
Howard Buffett gives his sheriff's badge to Ukraine's president |
Howard Buffett, Warren's oldest son, visited this week with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv. In a tweet, Zelenskyy said he appreciated the philanthropist's "signal of support" and "invited him to join projects on restoring irrigation systems in the Odesa region, supporting IDPs, demining and school nutrition reform." And in a short video clip supplied by Zelenskyy's office and posted by the Voice of America, Buffett is seen given Ukraine's leader a small gift from when he served in 2017 and 2018 as sheriff of Macon County in Illinois, where he lives. "You are the top law man here in Ukraine, so I'm giving you my old sheriff badge from when I was sheriff." |

Berkshire's top holdings of disclosed publicly-traded U.S. stocks by market value, based on today's closing prices. Holdings are as of March 31, 2022 as reported in Berkshire Hathaway's 13F filing on May 16, 2022, except for Apple, Bank of America, and U.S. Bancorp, which also include shares held as of Mar 31, 2022 as disclosed in New England Asset Management's 13F filing on May 14, 2022, and except for Occidental Petroleum, which is as of May 12, 2022. In addition to U.S. stocks, shares held as of December 31, 2021 of China's BYD, as listed in Buffett's 2021 letter to shareholders, are included. The price of those shares in U.S. trading is used to approximate the current market value of the position. The value of the stake as a percentage of the company's market value is fixed at what was listed as of December 31, 2021 in the letter.
