To all the agents in the house,
I have an early childhood memory of Charles Barkley telling me in a Nike commercial, "I am not a role model."
Barkley was talking about parenting ("Just because I can dunk a basketball doesn't mean I should raise your kid," he says) but that commercial inadvertently introduced the idea of a "role model" to me. It has stayed in the back of my mind, especially when it comes to work.
As a journalist, I have role models who wrote widely read articles, books, and blogs that were entertaining and muckraking. But I also have role models of colleagues whose work habits I observed and began to emulate.
I bring this up because today our partners at RealTrends released their annual list of the top 1000 agents in the country by sales volume and transaction sides. Not every elite agent participated, but most did, and the numbers seem, at the very least, a good starting point for who is at the top of residential real estate.
Are the people at the top of the list the role models for the real estate profession? Is Dallas agent Ben Caballero's mind-boggling productivity and efficiency in pairing homebuyers with homebuilders something you can learn from? What about Beverly Hills agent Jade Mills' extended track record as both a prolific dealmaker but also someone who can finesse the particulars of a high-end sale?
Agents, I am curious to know who you see as role models in the profession. Who perhaps made you want to become a real estate agent? And who today inspires you to keep grinding?
Please email me anonymously at mblake@housingwire. And thank you for all your replies Wednesday regarding getting paid by homebuilders. Expect more on that shortly.
